Memorial Day Weekend

It is weekends like these that truly allow each of us to appreciate the sweet taste of a freshly grilled burger or dog, an ice cold beer, and the camaraderie of friends and family. Let us not forget that these delightful freedoms resulted from the honorable sacrifices of U.S. men and women who have died in service to our country.

While this holiday’s roots were established to honor Union soldiers in the American Civil War, it expanded into its modern day form to include casualties of all military actions following World War I.

Today, I will have the privilege of attending Fleet Week in New York City. It is an annual string of events held to honor the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps. The week provides an unrivaled opportunity for soldiers and sailors to interact directly with the public and share their experiences during ship tours, demonstrations, static displays and special events. If you never have been to Fleet Week, add it to your to-do list immediately. You will never forget the parade of ships or your conversations with some of our best and brightest. Make certain you stick around for the Memorial Day commemoration that culminates with the playing of Taps and an unbelievable aircraft fly over. It will suddenly remind you that this weekend isn’t all about the beers and dogs. It is about honoring those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms and privileges.
